Tell Lawmakers that Providing Health Care Coverage for Children is a Priority
A healthy future for Oregon children requires us to ensure their healthy development today – today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens, parents, and community leaders. That’s why we have a responsibility as a state to make sure that our collective resources are being used to build the strongest foundation for our kids. Ensuring that every child has access to high quality affordable health care will establish this foundation, and guarantee a strong future for us all.
Unfortunately, today in Oregon, 1 in 8 of our state’s children, over 100,000, has no health insurance. The consequences of going without health insurance are well documented. Children without health coverage are ten times more likely to miss out on needed medical care. They’re more likely to suffer from earaches, sore throats and asthma – common childhood illnesses that force student to miss school and hamper educational success. They are less likely to receive preventive or early health care, and are more likely to end up in emergency rooms or require more expensive treatments.
Unlike many of the health problems that children face, the one that keeps over 100,000 kids from seeing a doctor because they don’t have health insurance is cure-able. Governor Kulongoski recently revived the plan that would cover nearly all of these uninsured children, but Oregon lawmakers still need convincing. State Legislators need to hear from you! Send a letter to your lawmakers today, demanding that they make children’s health a top priority, and help solve the epidemic of childhood uninsurance once and for all.
