Tuition Waivers for Former Foster Youth Fact Sheets
You may be hearing about a new law that provides tuition waivers to Oregon foster youth. The concept for this new law was inspired by the Oregon Foster Youth Connection, a group of current and former foster youth, between 14-25 years of age, working to improve the child welfare system in Oregon.
Members of OFYC chose to advocate for increased access to higher education because they know first-hand the difficulties foster youth face when trying to go to college, and the adverse outcomes they experience without an education. Currently, only 6% of former foster youth receive a two- or four-year degree, compared to 29% of the general population.
What can you do to help? Tell the foster kids you know about it, even if they are only in middle school. Tell your colleagues. Make copies of the info sheets below and share them at meetings. Don’t let a youth age-out not knowing this opportunity is there for them.
